Rulus Hamilton, 82, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, January 8, 2011, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Prentiss, Mississippi on January 23, 1929, he was the son of the late Henry Anderson Hamilton and Lena Ophelia McCray Hamilton. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Mr. Hamilton moved to Moody from Mississippi in the early 1950's. He then went to work at Pineview Medical Center in Valdosta and worked there for 36 years retiring in administration. After retirement from the hospital he worked with Joe Hall Used Cars for 18 years. Mr. Hamilton loved Wildcat football and attended the games for many years. He stayed very active by walking, working in his yard and going to cardiac rehabilitation. Mr. Hamilton was a Deacon and member of Northside Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Ernestine Sirmans Hamilton also of Valdosta; daughters and sons in law, Pat Smith of Moultrie, Susan and Gilbert Kidd of Gainesville, Florida, Lynn and Patrick Downs of Waycross; grandchildren, Jennifer Smith of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Jason (Melissa) Smith of Mentone, Alabama, Haley Rowe of Valdosta, Heather (Blaine) Haston of Ringold, Tatum Downs of Waycross, step grandchildren, Suzanne (Kelly) Johnson of Springfield, Oregon, Ross (Wendi) Kidd of Hahira; great grandson, Finn Merritt of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, step great grandchildren, Ethan and Aaron Johnson, Deven and Allie Kidd; sisters, Myrtice Leonard of Wesson, Mississippi, Johnnie Martin of Silver Creek, Mississippi; brother and sister in law, Shelby and Lucy Hamilton of Columbia, Mississippi, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Martin.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Bob Willis will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Reverend Doug Reddick officiating at the graveside. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Northside Baptist Church Building Fund or to the American Heart Association.
