Ruby Mae Lightsey, 92, of Lake Park, passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.
She was born February 5, 1922 in Echols County, the daughter of the late Oscar T. and Ruth Mae Culpepper Kinsey. During World War II, Ms. Ruby worked on Liberty Ships in Brunswick as a welder, and was honored at the Navy Ball in Key West last year for her dedicated work. Upon returning to Echols County, she worked various jobs, and was employed at Levi's until her retirement.
Mrs. Lightsey was a member of Sardis Baptist Church. Her joys in life were her church, her family and friends, catching the occasional fish and cooking for those who enjoyed eating.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie M. Lightsey, Jr.; and a son, Max Johns, II. She is survived by two sons, David Lightsey and wife Betty, Johnny Lightsey and wife Kathy; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Johns, all of Lake Park; seven grandchildren, Gidget Johns of Key West, FL, Max F. (Gig) Johns III and wife Ginger of Lake Park, Pilar Hansley of Valdosta, Jenna Lightsey of Panama City, FL, Blake Lightsey of Auburn, Morgan Lightsey of Valdosta, and Aaron Lightsey of Valdosta; three great-grandchildren, Arabi Luke, Kali Hansley and Aubry Hansley; and many people that she loved who knew her as Granny Ruby.
The Funeral Service for Mrs. Lightsey will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2014, at Sardis Baptist Church with Bro. Garvie Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at Kinsey Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home, Lake Park. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.mclanecares.com.
