Rose Anita Cote Hamel, 76, of Valdosta, was born on November 28, 1933 in Dover, NH, and she was called to God after a brief illness on August 5, 2010. She raised four children in an ever changing military environment while adding volunteer work to her busy schedule. After her husband retired from the military in Valdosta, she was a busy volunteer with the Valdosta Elks Auxiliary as she also worked in many positions at First Federal Savings and Loan. After her retirement, she shared travels and quality time with her husband of 57 years, Ray Hamel, Sr. who must now learn to function without her. She was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, a member and officer of the Valdosta Women's Bowling Association and the Retired Officers Wives Association. Mrs. Hamel served her God as best she could at her church, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was a devoted wife and mother of four children.
Mrs. Hamel is survived by her husband Raymond (Ray) F. Hamel, Sr. of Valdosta; a daughter, Helene I. Hamel of San Antonio, TX; and three sons and daughters in law, Ray, Jr. and Jan Hamel, of Valdosta, Robert A. & Nancy Hamel of Iowa City, IA and Roger D. & Barbara Hamel of San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by a sister, Florence Theberge of Somersworth, NH, and a brother Richard Cote of Dover, NH; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Pierre & Eve Caron Cote and a sister Jeannette Albert.
A funeral mass will be held for Mrs. Hamel at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Father Dan O'Connell will officiate. A prayer service for Mrs. Hamel will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening, August 8, 2010 at St. John's and the family will receive friends after the prayer service until 8 p.m. at the church. The cremains will be entombed at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. John the Evangelist Church Building Fund, 800 Gornto Rd, Valdosta, GA 31602 or the Elks Aidmore Children's Center, 2394 Morrison Road Conyers, GA 30094.
