Ronald Lamar (Ronnie) Spells, Sr., 73 of Mayday passed away Sunday, February 19, 2023, at South Georgia Medical Center, surrounded by family. Ronnie fought a long, courageous battle against heart failure. He was born on August 28, 1949, in Berrien County, GA to the late Samuel Kenneth Spells and Sally Cortellia Ray Spells. Ronnie graduated from Lowndes High School in 1967. After completing his first quarter at Valdosta State College, Ronnie suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and had an extensive recovery which included months in the hospital and learning to walk again.
In 1970, Ronnie met the love of his life, Wynell Tomlinson, and knew immediately she was the one, marrying later that year. Ronnie was an electrician by trade and began his career with Occidental Chemical Company/PCS in White Springs, Florida in 1979. For many years he was an electrical supervisor and retired as a control specialist in 2013. Ronnie met many lifelong friends and fishing partners through his career. Ronnie was also a member of Macedonia Baptist Church for over 40 years during which he enjoyed singing in the choir and volunteering as the chairman of the grounds committee. Ronnie loved the community and enjoyed serving others. He was a volunteer fireman for the Echols County Fire Department from 1976-2016 and left due to health issues. He was a passionate bass fisherman, fishing almost every Saturday morning for years. He also enjoyed competitive bass fishing for years with the Valdosta BASS club. Ronnie was a devoted family man and loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren.
Ronnie is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Wynell Tomlinson Spells of Mayday, daughter, Lisa Spells Harrington of Savannah, son and daughter-in-law, Lamar and Diane Spells of Dunwoody, three grandchildren, Ben Spells, Elizabeth Harrington and Emma Claire Harrington sister, Linda Sue Taylor of Interlachen, FL, and sister-in-law, Ann Spells of Valdosta. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Paul Joseph Giles IV, and brother, Sam Spells.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Macedonia Baptist Church in Mayday with Reverend Wayne Boykin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Condolences to the family may be expressed online at www.mclanecares.com.
