Roberta L. Clegg

July 20, 1932 — April 20, 2014

Roberta L. Clegg, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2014. She was born July 20, 1932 to C.E. Ferris Clegg and Maurine Leigh Clegg in Heber City, Utah. A scholar at the University of Utah, University of Colorado, and University of Oregon, she received a Ph.D. at the University of Maryland. She was an active member in Phi-Kappa-Phi, receiving their Valdosta State University's Faculty Scholar for 1990. Dr. Clegg truly enjoyed teaching Community Health Nursing and Research at the University of Delaware, in Newark, Delaware; Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona; University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, Wisconsin; and University of Virginia, in Richmond, Virginia before coming to the Valdosta State College. She was instrumental in establishing chapters of Sigma Theta Tau at the University of Virginia and the University of Wyoming. She participated in developing graduate nursing programs at the University of Delaware and Valdosta State University, while obtaining grants as well as teaching. She was active in the accreditation of five nursing programs for the National League for Nursing. She served as consultants to Georgia Southern College, Home Health Care Journal; Community Health Nursing; and Advances in Nursing Science; and Development of Associate Degree Programs in Arizona. Dr. Clegg functioned on several committees regarding overall University development.
She retired as professor emeritus at Valdosta State University in 1993. During retirement, Dr. Clegg completed extensive research on the diaspora of the Tibetan people by invading Chinese. She completed a book titled, Odyssey in Tibet to increase awareness of these atrocities. She sought refuge in the THREE GEMS and became an ardent devotee to Tibetan Buddhism.
One of her great joys in life was to travel. She managed 21 countries, China and Tibet were among her favorites; and all 50 states. State and national Parks were some of her favorite memories. The West held a very special place in her heart.
Dr. Clegg leaves a life long companion, Dr. Rose-Marlene (Mickie) Gieske, Valdosta, Georgia, to mourn. Additionally, a brother and sister-in-law, Ferris Leigh and Amy Clegg, their daughter, Jamie Clegg Byrd, and their sons, Bryan, Jason, and Jordan, of Richfield, Utah. Her sister Eleanor Darlene Thomas and her children Michael and Eleanor Nelson.
Thanks to Bethany Hospice for their supportive care. There efforts made it possible for me to die at home.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening, April 24, 2014, at the Carson McLane Funeral Home with a Celebration of Dr. Clegg's life beginning at 7:00 p.m. In keeping with her wishes, anatomical donation has been made to MedCure and her body will be cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to The Haven, 1601 North Patterson St., Valdosta, Georgia 31602, or to Bethany Hospice, 2517 Bemiss Rd, Valdosta, GA 31602.
