Robert S. Megow, 81, of Hahira, died on Monday, December 6, 2004. He was born in Lancaster, WI to the late Fred and Rae Megow and had lived here for the past 20 years. Mr. Megow had served as a Captain in the Army during WWII, having served during the Battle of the Bulge and participated in liberating two prison camps in Germany. He was an educator for over 20 years and then retired as director of the Vocational Educational Program of the Orange County School System. During that time he created the Career Education Program. He was the founder of the Pine Hills Little League and the Pop Warner Football League in Orlando. He was instrumental in starting the Hahira Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the Kairos Prison Ministry and was on the Board of Directors of The Refuge of Hope. Mr. Megow was a founding member of Southland Church and he and his wife Joye founded the Southland Church Clothes Closet in 1997, which has served thousands in Valdosta and Lowndes County. In 2000, Bob and Joye founded the Southland Church Prison Ministry serving four prisons in the South Georgia, North Florida area.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joye G. Megow of Hahira, a daughter, Susan Megow Hoyt of Valdosta, two sons and daughters in law, Thomas Robert and Denise Megow and James G. and Kimberly Megow, all of Valdosta; ten grandchildren, Catherine Creamer, Matthew Hoyt (Karen), Thad R. Megow, Robert Seth Megow, Claren Rae Megow, J. Graham Megow, Lindsay Catherine Megow, Parker Megow, Thomas Megow, and William Robert Megow; and one great grandson, Jackson Henry Hoyt; a sister, Ruth Dallas, of Philadelphia; two brothers and a sister in law, John and Janet Megow and Richard Megow and a sister in law, Maria Megow all of Orlando. Mr. Megow is preceded in death by a son in law, Jeffrey Dean Hoyt and a grandson in law, Hobert Creamer.
Funeral services for Mr. Megow will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday December 9, 2004 at Southland Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 3:30 p.m. until service time at the church. Rev. Doug Griner, Rev. Jean Jack and Rev. Randy Stephens will officiate. A private family committal will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will include David Ferrier, Paul Brumfield, Don Murrray, Serafin Perez, Pilar Martinez, Charles Brazwell, Patricio Barrados, Rusty Nelson and Hose Silvan. Honorary Pallbearers will include, Chaplain Miller, Dana Rahr, Jimmy Ard, Nathan Brown, Clarence Coleman, Robert Camacho, Jr., Dennis Parker, Willie Williams, Joe Way, Jr. Charlie Riggins, Ravindra Singh, Roger Walley, Scott La Bonte, Willie Jenkins, Aron Gillian, Jeffrey Dale, Clifford Cowart, John Anglin, Sean Sims, Robert Padilla. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Refuge of Hope, 7566 Hwy 84, Quitman, GA 31643, will be appreciated.
