Robert M. Johnson, 82, of Hahira died Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at his home. He was born in Pickettville (Jacksonville) Florida on July 9, 1937 to the late William F., Sr. and Luana Roberts Johnson and lived in this area most of his life. He attended the Hahira United Methodist Church and along with his late wife, Peggy owned and operated Johnson Office Equipment in Valdosta prior to retirement. Robert was a 1957 graduate of Valdosta High School where he was an outstanding athlete especially in football playing for Coach Wright Bazemore. He was named Athlete of the Year for Valdosta High School in 1956-1957. Coach Bazemore stated that Robert was probably the best athlete to have been at Valdosta High and knew how to perform under pressure to deliver touchdowns. Robert also played basketball, baseball and ran track at Valdosta High School.
Survivors include his daughter and son in law, Elizabeth and Curt Norman of Hahira; two sons and daughters in law, Robby and Darlene Johnson of Hahira, Randy and Gretchen Johnson of Valdosta; his grandchildren, Dillon Johnson, Devin and Levi Rocheleau, Tyler Johnson, Bailey and Brian Gracen, Slade Johnson, Jace and Jaycee Norman, Raegan and Shawn Mullins; his great grandchildren, Addison Jane Norman, Jackson Norman, Truitt Mullins, Bryce Gracen, Elaine Rocheleau; his sister and brother in law, Nancy and Jack Allen of Valdosta; sister in law and brother in law, Joyce and Richard Zella of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Williams Johnson to whom he married on December 18, 1960 and had been married for fifty five years at the time of her passing in 2016; three sisters and two brothers in law, Arminda J. Morrison, Bea and Jim Brantley, Betty and Lester Greene; two brothers and sisters in law, William F. (Bill), Jr. and Gerry Johnson, Thomas and Margie Johnson; his parents in law, Curtis and Minnie Lee Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Sunday, May 31, 2020 at Hahira United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7pm at the Martin/McLane Funeral Home in Hahira.
