Robert James Williams, Sr.

Robert James (R.J.) Williams, Sr., 84, of Valdosta died Friday, January 6, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on June 14, 1926 in Cecil to the late James Birner and Sula V. Warren Williams.
A veteran of WW II, Mr. Williams served in the U. S. Army with the 100th Division during the taking of Berlin, Germany. He returned home to Lowndes County and was a lifelong farmer, over the years growing cotton, corn, peanuts, cane, and livestock such as hogs and cows. He especially loved working with his cows. Very gifted with mechanical abilities, he made much of the equipment he used on the farm. His grandchildren, cousins and family loved to come to the farm during cane grinding season each year to make syrup. Mr. Williams loved to talk with his neighbors and with anyone who came to visit.
Survivors are one son and daughter in law, Robert, Jr. & Peggy Williams of Valdosta; five daughters and sons in law, Becky Crowley Buff of Valdosta, Betty & Lee Carter of Opp, AL, Jackie & Calvin Smith of Fitzgerald, Willene & John Clark of Valdosta, Louise & Jody Fowler of Valdosta; ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; brother & sister in law, Richard & Joyce Williams of Valdosta; sisters & brothers in law, Bertha & Joe Witte of Edgemont, SD, Christine & John Wynn of Clevelend; numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Rebecca McCranie, brothers, Warren Williams, Franklin Williams, sisters, Grace Goff, Sula Jane Faircloth.
Graveside services for Mr. Williams will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, January 8, 2011 in the Copeland Cemetery. Reverend C. Richard Williams, Jr. will officiate.
