Robert Ashley Colson, 61, of Valdosta died Friday, August 28, 2015 at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. He was born in Valdosta on June 15, 1954 and was a lifelong resident of Valdosta. He loved the Lord and was a faithful member of the Northside Baptist Church. Mr. Colson was a member of the Monday morning Mens Bible Study at McDonald's and a former Men's Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Colson served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and was retired from South Georgia Medical Center. He enjoyed fishing, working with bees and was everyone's handyman. The family would like to express appreciation to Dr. Sidney Staton, Dr. Joe Thomas, Claudia and the late Dr. Richard Nijem, South Georgia Medical Center and Shand's Hospital for the compassion and care of Ashley during his illness.
Survivors include his mother, Catherine Cagle Colson Corbett of Valdosta, two sisters and brothers in law, Lyndal Colson Sims and Brad Sims of Valdosta, Susan Colson Allen and Bill Allen of Hahira; three brothers and sisters in law, Kenneth (Ken), Jr and Patricia T. Colson of Hahira, James A. (Jim) and Patricia H. Colson of Valdosta, David M. and Shannon P. Colson of Virginia; nieces and nephews, Jeremy and Sarah Colson, Dr. Heather Colson Hardy and Geoff Hardy, Matthew and Kasey Colson, Kelly and Keith Lupton, Catherine and Jared McGahee, Michelle and Michael McGreevey, Troy and Ana Maria Allen. Elizabeth Colson, John David Allen and J. D. Colson, Christy and Robin Rucker; numerous great nieces, great nephews and cousins; paternal uncle, Calvin Colson of Kentucky; maternal aunt, Mona Faye Roberts of Ormond Beach, FL, maternal uncle, Melvin Cagle of Bainbridge, GA; best of friends, Fred and Ann Carlo, Ricky Zeigler and Family all of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Carmon Colson, a brother, Richard (Ricky) Warren Colson, maternal grandparents, Henry and Lucile Cagle, paternal grandparents, George and Willa Mae Colson.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the Northside Baptist Church with Dr. Robby Foster officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 31, 2015 at the Northside Baptist Church, 200 E. Park Avenue, Valdosta, GA 31602 from 5-7pm.
