Richard Elwood Stephens, 75, of Lake Park died Monday, April 29, 2013 at his home. He was born on January 24, 1938 in Cook County, Georgia to the late Ethridge W. and Oria Virginia Adams Stephens and moved to Lowndes County at a young age and attended Lowndes County Public Schools most these years at Pine Grove School. In his adult life he received Small Farmer of the Year Award and along with his farming he worked at ITT Metal Products for twenty nine years. Mr. Stephens was active as a volunteer leader in the 4-H Program with his children and served as a chaperone on exchange trips to Illinois and Oklahoma and many activities throughout the state. He was a active member of the Lake Park Christian Church where he served as church trustee. Mr. Stephens was a loving and dedicated husband, father, father in law, grandfather and great grandfather. His great grandchildren loved riding in the golf cart with Grandpa.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Margery Hall Stephens of Lake Park, his daughter, Remonda Stephens of Lake Park, three sons and daughters in law, Richard Stephens and Judy Griner of Enigma, James and Diane Stephens of Lake Park, Wendell and Gail Stephens of Valdosta, two grandchildren, Jessica Stephens of Lake Park, Patrick and Arely Stephens of Valdosta, three great grandchildren, Caleb Stephens of Lake Park, Ian Stephens of Valdosta, Elise Stephens of Valdosta, stepgrandchildren, Alison and Philip Atkinson of Marion, SC., Will Crick of Kennesaw, GA, Caitlyn Griner of Engima, step great grandchild, Abigail Atkinson of Marion, SC, nieces, Debbie and James Rogers of Lake Park, Marion and Howie Hartman, Dorothy Hightower, Jo Ann Sumner all of Valdosta, nephew, Billy Dennis of Lake Park, uncle, Carlos (Snook) Stephens of Brooks County, brothers in law and sisters in law, Sherman and Madelyn Hall of Pavo, Lowell and Judy Hall of Lake City, FL, Carolyn Hall, Wonda Arnold both of Valdosta, JoAnn Hartman of Atlanta, special friend, Wilmer Deas and the Pine Grove High School Class of 1958. He was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers in law, Marie and Gene Dennis, Robbie and Lundy Centerfitt, one brother, Rudolph Stephens, nephew, Darrell Dennis, nieces, Lillian West and Linda Thornton, three brothers in law, Eugene W. Hartman, Charles W. Arnold and Ludy Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Thursday, May 2, 2013 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Corinth Cemetery. Brother Larry Harden and Rev. Sherman Hall will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5-7pm at Carson McLane Funeral Home, 2215 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31602.
