Richard Bryce "Dick" Fine, 85, of Valdosta, passed away July 14, 2008 at South Georgia Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Fine was born July 13, 1923 in Bellflower, MO, and was the son of the late Henry C. and Ida Pearl (Whitley) Fine. He was educated in the Auxvasse and Mexico, MO schools, and worked for Curtiss-Wright Company in St. Louis, MO. He proudly served his country as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. During his time in the Marines, he was overseas for 22 months at various sections of the Pacific area, including Midway Island. He married Zenobia Montine Halford on June 10, 1945, who preceded him in death on February 23, 2005. To this union, two children were born. Mr. Fine was a wonderful, loving Christian husband, father, and grandfather. He was a kind and generous man to all, always thinking of others and willing to help anyone he could. He was a member of Charity Baptist Church, serving as a deacon before his health began failing.
Mr. Fine is survived by a daughter, Delores Sherouse, of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law, Owen and Gale Fine of Gainesville, FL; granddaughter and her husband, Dawn and Miles Dennard of Quitman; grandson, Owen Fine. Jr. of Oregon; seven great grandchildren, Steffanie and Hailey Dennard, Keith, Casey, Joseph Preston "J.P." and Max Sherouse, Zachary Fine; sister, Ruth Johnson of Columbia, MO; brother and sister-in-law, James B. "J.B." and Sandy Fine of Columbia, MO; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Francis and John Bearden of Zephyrhills, FL; brother-in-law, James R. "Jim" Neely; sister-in-law, Evelyn M. Fine; many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless dear friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Dean Ehrhardt, Helen Sullivan and Bessie Neely; two brothers, William "Bill" Fine and Robert "Bob" Fine; a grandson, Keith W. Sherouse, Sr.
A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Charity Baptist Church with Pastor Lee Graham and Pastor Clyde Stokes officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation at 1:30 p.m. at the church.
