Richard Black

April 8, 1915 — December 31, 2010

Richard (Dick) Black, 95, of Valdosta, passed away Friday, December 31, 2010, at his home.

He was born April 8, 1915 in Howell, a son of the late John Rice and Ida Lou Dennis Black. After graduating from Dasher Bible School in 1933, Richard began his working career with Copeland Brothers� Sausage Company. During that time, he married the former Grace Wynell Holloway and two sons were born, Ernest and Bobby. Then he contracted with the Naylor School Board to transport students to school. He secured a school bus and transported students for a number of years. When his contract finished, he went in partnership and bought the grocery store at Remerton. While there, WWII began and he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he remained until the war was over. When discharged, he was employed by Reid Electric Company and his third son, Allen, was born. Richard and his brother Leon formed Black Brothers Electric Company where he worked until retirement. After retirement, he worked part time with Carson McLane Funeral Home and The Dixie Cream Donut Shop. After a time, he fully retired.

Richard�s passions were singing, the church (where he was an elder for many years at Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ), family and friends.

He is survived by one son and three daughter-in-laws, Bobby and Shirley Black of Walterboro, SC, Cheryl Black of Valdosta, and Jeweldine Black of Valdosta; three sisters and two brothers, Madge Miller of York, NE, Leon and wife Ethel Black of Valdosta, Russell and wife Floyce Black of Atlanta, Jeanette and husband Bob Scott of Hartwell, and Grace and husband Gayle Napier of Houston, TX; six grandchildren, Dexter Black of Walterboro, NC, Karen (Robert) Rogers of Atlanta, Debbie (Chris) Lariscy of Hickory, NC, Al (Janet) Black of Valdosta, Derrick (Helen) Black, Shana (Jamie) Thomas of Valdosta; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Wynell Black, two sons, Allen Black and Ernest Black, and two sisters, Katherine Touchton and Mary Louise Black.

Funeral Services for Mr. Black will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Jere Via officiating. Interment will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The Black family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
