Richard Arlen Atkison, 73, of Valdosta, died at South Georgia Medical Center on January 3, 2017, following a long illness. Born in Centre, Alabama, on July 8, 1943, he was the son of the late Orbie Hamilton Atkison and Edna Lemming Atkison. A Bellsouth Technician for 25 years, Mr. Atkison was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1961 until 1966. He also served as Principal of Victory Christian School for 7 years and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Pearl Hardee Atkison of Valdosta; three sons, Michael Atkison, Jeffery (Roxie) Atkison of Valdosta, Roger (Kim) Atkison of Anderson, South Carolina; grandsons, Heath Atkison, Jeffery, Jr (Missie) Atkison, Lee (Tori) Atkison, Jake Atkison, and a granddaughter, Madison Atkison all of Valdosta; a sister, Lavern Naugher of Rome. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Orbie Atkison, Sr., Carl Atkison, and Travis Atkison.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Victory Baptist Church. Dr. Steve Ward and Reverend Carlton Allen will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday at Victory from 1:00 p.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victory Christian School 3229 Madison Highway Valdosta GA 31601.
