Reverend Lewis Albert Metts

Reverend Lewis Albert Metts, 82, of Valdosta went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 7:46 P. M. Friday, July 10, 2020 at his home. He was born in Orangeburg County, SC on April 8, 1938 to the late Louis Alfred Metz and Inez Hughes Metts. Reverend Metts was a retired Baptist minister. He pastored Gordon Street Baptist Church, Valdosta, founding pastor of Morningside Baptist Church of Valdosta and founder of Calvary Baptist Church in Gilberton, AL, and pastored at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in Greer, SC and First Baptist Church in Decatur, TN. Reverend Metts was interim pastor of Sardis Baptist Church, Lake Park, GA, Liberty Baptist Church in Nashville, TN, Harvest Fields Baptist Church in Pegram, TN. He was long time pastor of Grace Baptist Church here in Valdosta. Reverend Metts was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a mentor to many children and adults alike. If there was an open pulpit, he was ready to preach God’s word. Surviving are his wife of forty three years, Barbara Metts of Valdosta, son and daughter in law, Sonny Metts (Kelly) of Decatur, TN, daughter and son in law, Myra Settle (Eric Douglas) of West Point, GA, son and daughter in law, Reverend Michael Rickenbaker (Allison) of Henderson, TN, daughter, Marilyn Berry of Branchville, SC, grandchildren, Beth Metts, Casey Metts, Shelbi Metts, Avery Metts, L A “Laura” Greene-Smithwick, David Rickenbaker, Philip Rickenbaker, Danielle Rickenbaker-Stavely, Amber Heape and Adam Berry, ten great grandchildren, sisters, Geraldine Miller and Joan Wegner, brothers, Don Metts and Joe Metz. He is preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Janet Bilton Metts.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 12, 2020 at two p. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Farrell Morris, Reverend Roger Culpepper, Mr. Sonny Metts, Myra Settle and Reverend Michael Rickenbaker officiating. Visitation will follow the service. Burial will be Monday in Branchville, SC. Honorary pallbearers will be Freddie Goff, Jeremiah Culpepper, David Oliver, Jerry Arnold, Dave Oliver, Billy Metts, Henry Cannington, Casey Metts, Avery Metts, Philip Rickenbaker, David Rickenbaker and Adam Berry.
