Family and friends note with great sadness the passing of Reverend James S. Cox, Jr., 82, November 2, 2018 at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, Georgia. He was born to Anna and the Reverend James S. Cox in Washington, D.C. on September 12, 1936. We will remember his love for grandchildren, breakfast for dinner, his beautiful wife, the inner game of golf, Soren Kierkegaard, and great conversations.
James Jr. graduated from Princeton University in 1958 with a degree in English and Religion. He then received a degree in Theological Studies from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. He was a parish priest in North Carolina and Arkansas before completing a PhD program at Florida State University. He later taught English at the University of Louisiana while assuming duties as an Episcopal chaplain. He was passionately involved with continuous learning and sharing his intellectual discoveries with family and friends.
James is survived by his wife Juanita of 58 years, his children, James S. Cox, III (Austin, Texas), Katherine Pyle and Alice Bergeson (Valdosta), and his grandchildren, Dr. Chelsea Pyle (Portland, Oregon), McKenna Crick (Atlanta), Hyatt Pyle (West Point, Mississippi), John Yearsley (Seattle, Washington), Victoria Bergeson (Valdosta), Cameron Cox (Brooklyn, New York), and Andrew Cox (Austin).
The Rt. Rev. Alden Hathaway of Beaufort, South Carolina will conduct a memorial service at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
