Rev. Robbins E. (Bob) Dorsey, 80, of Valdosta died Friday, April 10, 2009 at the Langdale Hospice House. He is the son of Elmer Ezekiel (Cap) and Velma Dorsey of Nashville Georgia. Rev. Dorsey served 41 years in the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served as secretary of Town & Country commission, District Secretary of Board of Missions, Board of Ministry, Committee on Church Location , and Committee on Superintendency. His church was twice named "Church of the Year" in districts where he served. He served on several Local Ministerial Associations as President and Treasurer.
In his many appointments across South Georgia, he was active in the community serving various roles: Rotarian Director, Lion's Club chaplain, United Way Committee, Special Olympics, Board of Education, High School team chaplain, and City Recreation Department coach & official.
He retired in 1992, moved with his wife to Valdosta, and became associated with the Park Avenue United Methodist Church. There he taught part time in the Fellowship Class and the Parlor Class, assisted with communion, and occasionally preached at the evening service. He was frequently a pulpit supply & revival minister in churches across the Valdosta District and beyond. He was also active in the "Emmaus" community. In 2004 because of increasing health problems, he gave up his regular ministry except for visitation in the hospital and nursing homes.
Rev. Dorsey graduated from Nashville High School and Georgia Military Academy in Atlanta. He was a graduate of Asbury College and Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky where he met his bride of 57 years, Elia Lilley from Gatesville, North Carolina. He was a very devoted, loving husband and loving, proud Daddy and Granddaddy. He is survived by his wife, Elia, son and daughter in law, Zeke and Jessie Dorsey of Valdosta, daughter and son in law, Robin and Sam Zamarripa from Atlanta; four grandchildren, Matt Dorsey (wife Heather), Rex Dorsey, Jane and Eva Zamarripa; one brother and sister in law, Carroll & Shirley Dorsey of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 13 at 11AM at Park Avenue United Methodist Church in Valdosta Georgia. Interment will be at 3 PM at Union Baptist Church in Pitts Georgia (Wilcox County). The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 12 from 6 to 8 PM at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
