Remer L. Herring, 90, of Valdosta died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Lakehaven Nursing Home. He was born in the Barretts Community on April 23, 1918 to the late Grover C. and Coma Cooper Herring and had lived in this area all of his life. Mr. Herring was retired from the City of Valdosta as Director of the Water and Sewer Department. He was a Baptist, a member of the Azalea City Masonic Lodge and the Hasan Temple in Albany. Mr. Herring was an Atlanta Braves fan and he loved hunting, fishing and gardening. A WWII veteran of the United States Navy, he was a Seabee and he had fought with the Marines in the South Pacific, suffering five battle wounds while in combat. He also fought in New Guinea, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Bouganville and Okinawa.
Survivors include his son and daughter in law, Bill and Barbara Herring of Valdosta, daughter and son in law, Linda and Billy Evans of Macon, grandchildren, David Thomas Herring, Lana Elizabeth Herring both of Orlando, Fla, Jessica and Joe Torres, Marc Herring, Gina and David Roffe all of Valdosta, Sherry Berry and Ashley Evans both of Buford, great grandchildren, Angel Mae Herring, Shawn Roffe, Kira Roffe, Bradley Berry and Bailey Berry, two sisters, Hazel Blackburn of Columbia, SC. and Kathleen (Kitty) Bass of Valdosta, one brother and sister in law, J. Frank and Bernice Herring of Dawsonville, one brother in law, Kenneth Moore of Mayday, sister in law, Genez Turner of Panama City, Fla., special cousin, J. Edgar (Jim) Herring of Valdosta, numerous nieces, nephews, friends and co-workers. He was preceded in death by his wives, Fannie Rouse Herring and Helen Sirmans Herring, a son, Tommy Herring, grandson, Brad Evans, sister, Frances Moore and two brothers in law, George H. Blackburn and Ransom M. Bass.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Wayne Montgomery and Reverend Charlie Scarborough will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens with Masonic Graveside Rites and Military Honors.
