Remer E. Wetherington

March 20, 1932 — January 14, 2024

Remer E. Wetherington, 91, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Langdale Hospice House. Born in Cook County to the late Moses Clinton Wetherington and Vera Taylor Wetherington, they moved to Valdosta when Remer was in the 4th grade. He graduated from Valdosta High School in 1950. After graduation, Remer continued working at Roddeys Hardware, where he started working when he was 13, sweeping floors. He would continue working there, eventually becoming the Manager, for 62 years, prior to his retirement in the late 2000’s. In 1958, while at a dance at the Georgia National Guard Armory, Remer met Maxine McEvans, from Statenville. The dancing didn’t go so well, but their meeting created an impression, and they soon started dating and were married on June 7, 1959. He was a devoted fan of the Valdosta Wildcats all of his life. He was also a devoted alumni, often gathering with former classmates to share a meal or just walk and talk. For many years, the Wetherington’s attended Lee Street Baptist Church and then became charter members of Crossroads Baptist Church, were Remer served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. Fishing for catfish with family members and eating anything associated with peanuts were also favored pastimes for Remer.


Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Maxine Wetherington of Valdosta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ed & Gwen Wetherington of Fortson and Bruce & Melissa Wetherington of Acworth; six grandchildren, Ansley Wetherington of Athens, Reynolds Wetherington of Fairburn, Claudia Wilson of Charlotte, NC, Abby Wilson of Auburn, AL, Zackery Wetherington of Kennesaw, and Caleb Wetherington of Acworth. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Christine Wetherington of Valdosta and Brenda Wetherington of Tifton, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by four brothers, M C Wetherington, Jr., Charles Wetherington, Ronald Wetherington and Roy Wetherington; and a sister Evelyn Wilson.


The funeral for Mr. Wetherington will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Pastor Garrett Grubbs and Pastor Matt Gay will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Carson McLane Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, January 16, 2024 from 5 until 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads Baptist Church Building Fund, 3001 Country Club Drive, Valdosta, GA, 31602.
