Rebecca M. Whitman, 96 of Quitman, and formerly of Baxley, died on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at the Presbyterian Home after a short illness. Born on December 24, 1908 in Atlanta, she was the daughter of the late Walter Memphis McConnell and Janie Peters McConnell. She worked at Valdosta Daily Times in the early 1940’s and then at the Appling County Department of Family and Children Services until she retired. Mrs. Whitman was a volunteer at the Baxley Hospital and was Citizen of the Year in Baxley in 1987. She was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Baxley where she served as district and local treasurer of the United Methodist Women and a member of the choir.
Survivors are one sister, Mildred Whitehead of Valdosta, three nephews and their spouses, Lonnie and Dee Ann Whitehead of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Walter and Lois Whitehead of Alpharetta, Mack and Joy Mixer of Dawsonville; one niece, Jane Sherwood of Valdosta and several great nieces, great nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Whitman and a sister, Jane Mixer Patterson.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman with Reverend Ned Simmons officiating. A graveside Cremains Committal will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens with Reverend John McGowan officiating.
