Raymond Millard Tillman, 78, of Valdosta, died Friday, April 21, 2006 at his residence. He was born on October 2, 1927 in Lakeland, Florida to the late Lyman Millard and Odessa Cooper Tillman. Mr. Tillman was a long time businessman in Valdosta and a lifelong resident. He graduated from Valdosta High School where he played for the Wildcats. Mr. Tillman served in the United States Navy. He co-owned and operated Tillman Motors, which was established in 1939. Mr. Tillman was dedicated to his family, enjoyed his business, his farm and his horses. He was an avid horseman who participated in and won numerous long distance endurance and competitive races. Mr. Tillman was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Valdosta for over fifty years. He served as a deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher and was a member and especially fond of the Men’s Bible Class. Mr. Tillman served as mentor and role model for many individuals in the area who are still active in the used car business.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Tillman of Valdosta, four daughters and sons in law, Cathy and David Ladner of Hamilton Square, New Jersey, Marianne and Jimmy DeVane of Mandeville, Louisiana, Judy and J. C. Long of Atlanta, Carol and Don Brotherton of Valdosta, seven grandchildren, Becky Ladner, Debbie Ladner, Christy Vaccaro, Whitney and Greg Costin, Elizabeth and Paul Miller, Natalie Long, Wesley Long and one great grandson, Chandler Vaccaro.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 23, 2006 at 5 p. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Don Stanley and Mr. Lamar Cole officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:30 p. m. until 5 p. m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, P.
