Ransom M. Bass

March 11, 1923 — March 25, 2006

Ransom M. Bass, 83 of Valdosta, died on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born on March 11, 1923 in Lowndes County, he was the son of the late James Newton and Myrtle Carter Bass. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II in the Pacific and as a Gunners Mate on the Battleship USS Washington.

He served on the Valdosta Police Force for 33 years. He began walking the beat in 1950 and over the years worked his way up to chief. He served as Valdosta’s first chief of detectives retiring as assistant chief August 1, 1983. In 1971, he was selected as Policeman of the Year for Valdosta. He was a Mason in the Azalea Lodge. He was a Shriner in the Hasan Temple and Morocco Temple and assisted in driving children to Shriner hospitals around the southeast for their treatment. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He loved fishing and working with flowers. Mr. Bass was member of Crossroads Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Herring Bass of Valdosta, who he celebrated 60 years of marriage with this year on February 14th. Other survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Karen Bass of Lake Park; grandchildren, Mike and Kloan Bass of Hahira, Clint Bass and Kayla Bass both of Lake Park; great grandchildren, Alyson Bass and Kaitlyn Bass both of Hahira.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2006 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Charlie Scarbrough and Dr. Ken Alford officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
