Placido Thomas Benavides

Placido T. Benavides, 76, of Valdosta, died on Monday, January 12, 2015 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born in Conception, TX to the late Isidro, Sr. & Josepha Perez Benavides. At an early age, Mr. Benavides joined the U. S. Air Force and while he was stationed at Moody Air Force Base in the late 1950's, he met and then married Sarah McGauley. Then they and their children moved all over during his 20 plus year Air Force career. During this career, he served 3 tours as a Crew Chief in aircraft maintenance and 2 tours in Korea before retiring at Moody Air Force Base in 1977. Following this career, he worked for Bayliner boats for 10 years and then in security at Trus Joist for several years. Mr. Benavides loved to fish, particularly with his wife as long as her health allowed, and after that, with anyone who would go with him or by himself. He was a very generous person who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sarah Benavides of Valdosta; his daughter and son in law, Velda & Tim Shuman of Lakeland; five sons and a daughter in law, Victor Benavides, Benjamin Benavides, Placido Benavides, Jr., Gary Patrick Benavides and Joseph & Judy Benavides, all of Valdosta; 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister and brother in law, Olga & Alfonzo Garza of Alice TX, and three brothers and sisters in law, Isidro & Mary Benavides of Louisville, TX, Carlos & Lidia Benavides of Big Town, TX, and Oscar & Viola Benavides of Corpus Cristi, TX. He is preceded in death by a son, Benny Kenny Benavides and two daughters in law, Brenda Benavides and Becky Benavides.
A funeral for Mr. Benavides will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. Dillard Ensley and Rev. Clyde Stokes will officiate. Burial will follow at Ousley Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2015.
