Phoebie Guess Slocum

May 6, 1924 — May 9, 2019

Phoebie Guess Slocum, of Valdosta, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 9, 2019. She had resided in Columbia, SC, where she had been lovingly cared for the past eight years. She had just celebrated her 95th birthday with family and friends. Phoebie was born in Quitman, GA on May 6, 1924 to the late Allen Bartow Guess and Phoebie Gunby Guess. She graduated from Morven High School. After graduation, she moved to Valdosta and worked for the telephone company until she met and married Loyd Carlton Slocum. They were married 47 years, until his death in 1994. She was a homemaker through the years of raising her children. She then went to work as a teacher's aide in the Lowndes County School system, for several years, which she greatly enjoyed. Phoebie was a life-long member of the Central Avenue Church of Christ. Her church family was very important to her. For many years she was a Sunday school teacher and was very involved in the church. Her hobbies were gardening, enjoying community education classes, and being a docent at the art gallery.
Phoebie is survived by her daughter Cindy (George) of White Salmon, WA and her son Andy (Christy) of Wedgefield, SC. She has two grandsons, Tim (Bethany) Slocum of Macon, GA and Josh (Kelli) Slocum of Birmingham, AL, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Carlton, sisters Allie, Roberta, Laverne, and brothers A.B, Bill and Donald.
