Philip Ikeler Elder, 94, of Valdosta, died on Friday, December 26, 2008 at Langdale Hospice House, following a brief illness. Born in Berwick, Pennsylvania on December 20, 1914, Phil was the son of the late Lemuel Maus and Mary Maria Ikeler Elder. He was a gradute of Bloomsburg State Teachers College in Pennsylvania. His enlistment in the U. S. Navy in the 1930's resulted in his attendance at Parks Air College where he became a Cadet and eventually an instructor at the Navy Flight School in Pensacola, Florida. During WWII he flew torpedo bombers in the South Pacific and continued his Navy career until his retirement from the Naval Reserves. He was a part of the founding group of Metal Products and a Charter Member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church. A member of the Valdosta Country Club, Phil enjoyed the game of golf and caring for his yard.
Survivors are his wife, Ruth Elder of Valdosta; a son, Bob Elder of Annapolis, Maryland; three grandchildren, Scott Elder of Portland, Oregon, Stephanie (Joe) Parks of Severna Park, Maryland, Stacey Elder of Valencia, California; two great grandchildren, Madelyn Parks and Logan Parks. He was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday evening, December 30, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Interment will be held at a later date at Bayview Memorial Park in Pensacola, Florida. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanefuneralservices.com.
