Percy Allen (Al) Baskin , 86, of Valdosta passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at South Georgia Medical Center following a recent illness. He was born in Meridian, Mississippi to the late Dalton and Emma Avant Baskin and had lived in Valdosta since meeting and marrying his wife of 64 years. Mr. Baskin retired from the United States Postal Service as Superintendent of Mails following a 30 year career which started as a postal carrier. He served in the United States Navy during World War II on a converted aircraft carrier used as a mine detection vessel. Mr. Baskin was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, a former member of the National Postal Supervisors, a charter member of the Francis Lake Golf Club, a former member of the Elks Club, a former Shriner, and a current member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Baskin played professional baseball with the Valdosta Dodgers, a farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers, in the late 1940's . He continued his love of baseball by serving as an umpire for the Little League Baseball Program in the Valdosta area during the 1960's. He became an avid golfer following his retirement from the postal service, continued to enjoy his love of fishing and dedicated his spare time to the development of his family's genealogy, discovering and contacting several long lost members of his family. He will always be remembered as a very dedicated family man.
Survivors include his wife , Ouilda Cowart Baskin, his son and daughter in law, Perry and Karen Baskin; his daughter, Diane Jernigan all of Valdosta ; his grandchildren, Otto and Lycia Baskin ( Plainwell, MI), Stephen and April Baskin(Valdosta, GA) Chad and Debra Moore (Phoenix, AZ), Jason Moore, Crystal Jernigan, Rhett and Tammy Burroughs all of Valdosta, and Kelly and Carey Holmes (Jacksonville, FL); 14 great grandchildren, 2 – great great grandchildren, one brother, Frank Baskin (Gauche, MS) ; two sisters, Joyce Harrison ( Meridian, MS) and Emma Lou Brassfield (Fort Worth, TX). He was preceded in death by a son; Jerry Dwain Baskin, three brothers; Howard Baskin, Dalton Baskin, Jr. and Ben Baskin; two sisters, Mary Alice Kinard and Milbrey Cooley.
Graveside services will be held at 2pm, Sunday, Feburary 3, 2013 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Rev. V. L. Daughtery officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7 pm at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 100 E.
