Patrick James Shay, 72, of Valdosta, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015, at South Georgia Medical Center.
He was born January 9, 1943, in Rochester, NY, a son of the late James and Mary Shay. He grew up in Rochester and as a young adult had honorably served in the U.S. Army. He later lived in California for many years, as well as Daytona, FL, before retiring to Valdosta to be closer to his grandchildren. Mr. Shay had returned to his faith after fifty years and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He was a good father, a hard worker, and the friendliest person in any room. He enjoyed country music and making new friends. Most of all, he cherished spending the last years of his life close to his grandchildren, so much so that he introduced himself to others as "Grandpa Pat."
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Sam Alzheimer of Valdosta; son, Steve Shay of Cary, NC; three grandchildren, Sophia, Simon, and Anastasia Alzheimer; and a sister and brother-in-law, Maureen and Roger Skurski of South Bend, IN. He had an aunt who was very special to him, Sister Mary Catherine of Rochester, NY. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Terry Shay.
A Memorial Mass will be held for Mr. Shay at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2015, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with Rev. Brian La Burt officiating. Interment will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanefuneralservices.com. Carson McLane Funeral Home, Valdosta.
