Valdosta, GA

Patricia Gunn Amos passed away on January 20, 2025, at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. Patti, as she was affectionally called, was born on August 12, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Gertrude Morris Gunn and Homer Columbus Gunn. She grew up in Birmingham and often spoke fondly of her idyllic childhood there. Patti graduated from Auburn University where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and where she made wonderful, lifelong friends. She remained an avid Auburn football fan her entire life. After moving to Valdosta in 1968, Patti and her family joined First Presbyterian Church where she was an active member in the Women of the Church and a volunteer with Break Bread Together.Patti made the decision to study nursing after her daughters graduated from high school. She entered nursing school at ABAC and soon became “Mama Patti” to the other nursing students in her class. After graduation from ABAC, she enjoyed her career as an RN at South Georgia Medical Center until her retirement. While at SGMC she was known as an excellent nurse and as being upbeat and encouraging to other staff members. She made lasting friendships with many of her co-workers. Patti moved into assisted living at Presbyterian Home in 2019. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Leigh and Steve Kabdebo of Mexico Beach, Florida; her daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Michael Nelson of Hawthorne, New Jersey; and her three grandchildren, to whom she was “YaYa”: Ryan Kabdebo of Atlanta; Kelly Nelson of Hawthorne, New Jersey, and Kristopher Nelson also of Hawthorne, New Jersey. Patti was preceded in death by her beloved parents and by an infant son, William George Amos. The family especially wishes to thank Dr. Larry Smith for his excellent medical care of their mother over the past 30 years. A celebration of Patti’s life will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Patricia Gunn Amos may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Valdosta or to Break Bread Together, a ministry of First Presbyterian Church.
