Otis Gray Ricketts, Jr., 96, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, September 25, 2016. Otis was born on 29 February 1920 in Lamison, Wilcox County, Alabama to the late Otis Gray and Sadie Mae Ricketts.
Otis and Evelyn Sewell were married on 26 November 1938 in Camden, Alabama and lived a full and happy life together until her death in February 2008. They were married for 69 years. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a Medical Corpsman and Surgical Technician. After the war, he returned to Alabama and worked with the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) bringing electricity to rural communities in South Central Alabama. He owned and operated Catherine Mercantile Company in Catherine and Alberta, Alabama. In 1955 he moved his family to Fargo, Georgia and established Fargo Oil Company as the regional Texaco Distributor. He retired in 1986 and made his home in Valdosta. He served as a Deacon at Northside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his brother Carl Ricketts; his sister Sudie Richter; two sons and daughters in law, Allan & Nell Ricketts, and Ron & Letitia Ricketts; three grandsons Christopher Ricketts, David & Michelle Ricketts, and Bill Ricketts and two great grandchildren, Christopher Ricketts and Lilly Ricketts.
A Graveside Funeral for Mr. Ricketts will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Rev. John McGowan will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Georgia's Langdale Hospice House, P.O. Box 1727, Valdosta, GA 31603.
