Orvis James Cowart, 94, of Valdosta and formerly of Waycross died Friday, September 7, 2012 at the Langdale Hospice House. He was born on November 30, 1917 in Telfair County, Georgia to the late Caleb Talmadge and Emma Towns Cowart and had lived in Waycross for sixty years before moving to Valdosta in 2003. A World War II veteran, he spent two years serving in the Pacific as a Technical Sargeant with the United States Army. Mr. Cowart worked as a manager with Snively Groves Wire Box and retired from the veneer business with the Corbett Organization after serving as a plant manager for twenty years. He served on the advisory board of Congressman William Stucky for eight years and a member of the Waycross Masonic Lodge #305 for more than fifty years. Mr. Cowart was a longtime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waycross and was currently a member of the Hahira United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his loving of wife of sixty four years, Belle W. Cowart.
Survivors include his devoted daughter and son in law, Patricia and Frank Pittman of Valdosta, his grandchildren, Tim Pittman, Sandee (Tony) Simmons all of Valdosta, five great granddaughters and one great great grandson, one sister and brother in law, Quilda and Allen Baskins of Valdosta and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. 3945 North Valdosta Road, Valdosta, GA 31602 with Rev. Bob Willis officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 1-2pm at the Mausoleum Chapel. Memorials may be made to Langdale Hospice House, P. O.
