Olin M. Mason, Sr.

Olin M. Mason, Sr., 94, of Valdosta passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Langdale Hospice House. He was born on June 11, 1916 in Furman, South Carolina to the late Thomas Allen, Sr. and Cora Evelyn Hewitt Mason and had lived in Valdosta since 1956. Mr. Mason served in the United States Army during World War II as sergeant under General George Patton. After he returned from World War II in 1945, he went home to South Carolina and married Rosemary Hills on February 1, 1953. He was a livestock inspector for the Federal Government before moving to Valdosta in 1956.

Mr. Mason was the former co-owner of Farmers Supply Company with Dr. and Former State Senator Loyce Turner and former owner of Mason's Grocery on Rocky Ford Road. He was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, the American Legion and an avid fan of the Valdosta Wildcats and the Atlanta Braves.

Survivors include his son, Olin M. Mason, Jr. of Valdosta, his sisters in law, Irene Mason of Myrtle Beach, SC. and Ruthie Mallard of Charleston, SC., numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Mason was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Rosemary Hills Mason who passed away on March 7, 2001, his brothers, Frank Causey Mason, Thomas Allen Mason, Jr. and his sister, Marion Irene Mason all of South Carolina.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Park Avenue United Methodist Church wirh the Rev. Willie Beasley offciaiting. Burial with military honors will follow in the Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
