Norman Conrad Weiffenbach (U.S.Army, Ret.), 85, of Hahira, died on July 19, 2020 after a lengthy illness. Born in Dayton, OH on July 29, 1934 to the late Paul Sorg & Mary Griner Weiffenbach, he had lived in this area for the past 42 years. Growing up in Dayton, Norman joined first the Reserves and then the U.S. Army in the early 1950’s. He was stationed several places before being deployed to Southeast Asia to fight in the Vietnam Conflict. There in Vietnam he was involved in the Battle of Ia Drang, which is described in the book, “We Were Soldiers Once, and Young”. While in Vietnam, he was severely wounded and was treated in the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington for three years. He then retired from the U.S. Army as a Command Sergeant Major in the late 1960’s. He moved back to Ohio for several years, then Florida and then in 1978 moved to Hahira to be near family. While in Hahira he served for several years as a City Councilman, and was a member of the Hahira United Methodist Church. Norman was also a Mason and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Eleanor Gross Weiffenbach of Hahira; two daughters and a son in law, Sheree Weiffenbach of Valdosta, Terri & David Spieler of Monroe; a granddaughter, Chelsea Spieler of Monroe and a two great grandchildren, Isaiah & Gisele Spieler, both of Monroe. He is also survived by a special niece, Sally Turner; a nephew Steve Turner and several other nieces & nephews and special friends, Leisa Williams & George Hill. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Roger Paul Weiffenbach, Gordon Keith Weiffenbach, and Cheryl Ann Wheeler.
The funeral for Mr. Weiffenbach will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 in the chapel of Martin/McLane Funeral Home in Hahira. Rev. Mike Davis will officiate. The family will speak to friends briefly following the service. Then there will be a private interment at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Shriners Childrens Hospital at www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org .
