Norma Mary Knuth Smith, 79, of Valdosta passed away Tuesday, January 17th, 2017 at the home she shared with her husband of 42 years, Dr. Randall L. Smith. She was born on January 31st, 1937, in Miles, Iowa to the late Hans & Nellie (Patterson) Knuth. She graduated from Lost Nation High School (Lost Nation, Iowa) in 1954 and from Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa. She devoted her life to education and music, teaching kindergarten and music at Valwood School in Valdosta as part of a career that included schools in Michigan, California, Okinawa, Germany, and Saudi Arabia.
She is survived by her husband, Randall as well as her son and daughter-in-law Jeffery & Christine Hicks and their children, Braden, Ryan, and Gavin of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, and her son and daughter-in-law Jonathan & Elizabeth Smith and their two children, Liam and Calvin, of Silver Spring, Maryland, and by her three brothers and four sisters.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, January 20th, 2017 from 6-8 PM at Carson McLane Funeral Home; a memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, January 21st at 2 PM at Carson McLane. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the National Parkinson Foundation (www.parkinson.org) or the lower school music program at Valwood School (www.valwood.org). Her family wishes to thank her longtime caregiver, Ms. Elizabeth Floyd, and the staff of Hospice of South Georgia for their exceptional devotion and care throughout her illness.
