Norma Jean Carter Norman

May 31, 1941 — August 10, 2017

Norma Jean Carter Norman, 76, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Fellowship Home, following a lengthy illness. She was born on May 31, 1941 in Lake Park, GA to the late Norman Lester & Ophelia Mamie Carter. Formerly of Brandon, FL, she has lived here for the past 2 ½ years. During her childhood, the family moved to Lakeland, FL. She graduated from Lakeland High School in 1959. After high school, she worked for several years as a phone operator for Peninsular Telephone Company. Each year, there is a parade in Plant City, FL during the Strawberry Festival, it was at this parade in the mid 1960’s that Norma Jean met Kenneth Norman. They were soon married and would have celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on August 27th. As the Norman’s began their family, she was a very supportive and active mother. She participated and helped lead the girls’ activities. When the girls got a little older, she accepted a position as an Aide to a County Commissioner in Hillsborough County. She served in this role for a decade, serving several County Commissioners. Mrs. Norman was also very active in social and service organizations in the Brandon area. She is a past president of the Junior Woman’s Club and also a former member of the Service League of Brandon. Prior to moving to Valdosta, she was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church of Brandon, which is now New Hope UMC. Mrs. Norman was also a big fan of the Florida Gators and loved cheering for them at basketball and football games.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Norman of Valdosta; two daughters and a son in law, Melissa Brookfield of Richmond, VA and Elizabeth & Carl Holley of Valdosta; five grandsons, Parker & Grant Brookfield, both of Richmond, VA, Carter, Jared & Ben Holley, all of Valdosta. She is also survived by a brother and sister in law, Jacky & Patsy Carter of Lakeland, FL; a sister, Emmie Renfro of Lakeland, FL and a sister in law, Annie Norman of Ocala, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral for Mrs. Norman will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. Hale Bishop and Miss Jamie Bone will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m. until service time.
