Nancy Clare Peters Johnson, 77, of Valdosta, died at home after a lengthy illness on Thursday, July 17, 2008. She was born in Washington, D.C. on December 12, 1930. She was the fourth child of Melville F. Peters and Clare Hindle Peters of Beltsville, Maryland. At the age of sixteen, Nancy moved to Georgia to attend Brenau College. That is where she met her future husband who was teaching at Riverside Military Academy. She married Ralph B. Johnson on July 15, 1949 and they had a full marriage of 43 years. They moved to Valdosta in 1951.
Nancy taught in the Valdosta School system for one year and then taught the rest of her career in the Lowndes County School System. In addition to being a Fifth Grade teacher for one year, she spent the remainder of her teaching with the Discovery Gifted program. After retiring from teaching, she worked a few years for the South Georgia Regional Library. She retired from the library due to poor health. Nancy was a member of the Joy Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Valdosta, and enjoyed activities of Learning in Retirement at VSU Continuing Education. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Friends of the Library of SGRL. She instilled deep Christian values in her children, and loved everyone. Being a very loving and giving person, she opened her home during the Holiday season to many friends and family members through the years.
She is survived by her four children, Stephen N. Johnson of Lake City, FL, Dixie Lee Johnson of Hortense, Erika Jim Rowlette of Tijeras, NM, and Valerie Jo Peacock of Tallahassee, FL; six grandchildren, Christopher Noel Johnson, Noel B. Johnson, Kevin Lee McDaniel, Heather Lane McDaniel, Jay Walter Peacock, and Ernest Clay Rowlette; two great-grandchildren, Emmalane Marie Johnson and Alexa Marie McDaniel; a half brother, Todd Peters of Cape Cod, MA, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991, a sister, Emily Peters Rennie of Detroit, MI, and two brothers, Melville H. Peters and William H. Peters of Beltsville, MD.
Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Dr. Phil West officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 9:30 until 10:30 am Saturday at Carson McLane Funeral Home.
