Nancy Cargile, 77, of Lake Park, died on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Fellowship Home. Born on February 9, 1932 in Live Oak, FL, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Eugene and Bertha Mae Willis Bray. She was of the Christian faith.
Nancy, better known as “Nanny”, was a devoted and loving wife to her husband Bill Cargile for 55 years. Although she was a licensed cosmetologist and office manager for her husband’s business, she considered her most rewarding career to be a homemaker for her husband and 3 children. Her most prized possessions were her children and grandchildren. Her family spent countless hours around the kitchen table playing rummy, scrabble and trouble. Nanny loved to shoot. She was such a great shot, that her grandsons gave her the nickname, “Nanny Oakley”—a legend that will live on forever. She was a kind and gentle soul that not only embraced her family, but touched countless lives in the community. Not only did she open her home for weddings, showers and reunions, but it was also opened to countless people who had no place to call home. Nanny provided rest for the weary, hope for the hopeless and peace for those whose lives were in turmoil. Many cups of coffee were shared around her kitchen table, where she offered an open ear and a wise tongue of council. She did a wonderful job at making her home a haven for so many. It has always been said that Nanny had the best hugs. She even said herself, “I hug people in, and hug people out and many times don’t remember their names”. Even through times of adversity, Nanny was able to find a bright spot in any given situation. She taught her family to do the same—a legacy that will be gifted for generations to come. For 8 years our beloved mother has braved the battle of Alzheimers. Even though she no longer knew those she loved most, she could still sing old gospel hymns word for word, proving once again that in the midst of this devastating disease—there is a glimmer of light. Nanny’s family rejoices with her as she joins loved ones that have gone on before her, and we long for the day when we will once again hear her voice sing, “I see somebody”. We love you Wife, Mama, Nanny and Grandnanny.
