NAN ALLEN, 99, of Valdosta died Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on May 3, 1909 in Sandersville to the late Ruben and Cornelia Williams Pope and lived in Valdosta most of her life. Mrs. Allen was the oldest member of the Northside Baptist Church and was a retired administrator with the Valdosta City School System. She served as principal of the Fargo School, Leila Ellis Elementary and Sallas Mahone Elementary having retired in 1971 after more than forty years in education. Mrs. Allen graduated from Georgia State Women's College and received her Masters degree from Mercer University. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Wymodausis Club, Literary Guild, the Lowndes County Historical Society and several garden clubs.
Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Julian and Margaret Allen of Greenville, SC, two grandsons and granddaughter in law, Alex and Amy Allen of Colorado Springs, CO. and Edward Allen of Austin, TX., three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Allen.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Northside Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Stevens officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4pm, Thursday at the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Abbeville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
