Myrtis Avera Howell

Myrtis Avera Howell, formerly of Valdosta and Quitman passed away February 16, 2017, after a lengthy illness. Originally from Valdosta, Georgia, she was well known and appreciated in the community there for her active work in Music and the Arts.
Married 71 years to Leonard (Rudy) Howell, Jr., who preceded her in death, she will always be remembered for her love for family, music, and to a huge degree, the church she supported in service all her life. As matriarch of the Howell family, she always kept family as the focal point of her life. Mrs. Howell and her husband were charter and former members of the Northside Baptist Church in Valdosta as well as former members of the First Baptist Church in Quitman and Valdosta
She was also preceded in death by sons, Leonard Howell and David Howell. She is survived by daughter, Elizabeth Nordan and son, Paul Howell, brother , Ed Avera, and sister, Martha Hixson, in addition to a large family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Myrtis was active in the community, particularly in sharing her talents with music and ministry. Others may remember her Bridge playing skills as she attained Grand Master status with the American Bridge Association.
Well-traveled with her husband Rudy, she was always happy to come home to her family and friends. Living a rich and blessed life with her husband and family, she now resides in the arms of our Lord, and joins her so loved husband yet again.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at Powell Baptist Church with the Dr. Randall Whitaker officiating.
