Mrs. John Furman Stewart

July 17, 1935 — January 1, 2005

Mrs. John Furman Stewart, 79, died Saturday, January 1, 2005 at her residence after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Stewart, formerly Clo Reita King, was the only child of the late Rubye Maloney and Corbett Mitchell King of Brooks County, GA. She was the great great granddaughter of the late Willis King, early settler of Brooks County.

Mrs. Stewart was born in Brooks County, a graduate of Dixie High School and attended Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee, FL. She married John Furman Stewart of Greenwood, SC, November 23, 1943.

Mrs. Stewart was active in church and civic organizations in Thomasville, GA where she lived for fifty one years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she served on the administrative board, circle chairperson of United Methodist Women, Altar Guild and charter member of Sue McTier Sunday School Class. Mrs. Stewart was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, active in Boy Scouts, member of DAR and UDC, Past President of Countess Vandal Garden Club, Past President of Thomasville Garden Club, Inc., served as co-chairperson of the Rose Show and volunteered at Archbold Hospital and Pebble Hill Plantation. She was selected as one of twenty fine outstanding women in 1989 by the Flint River Girl Scout Council, Albany, GA. Mrs. Stewart was selected Woman of the Year by the Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce in 1991. She served as civic representative on Thomasville-Thomas County Clean Community Commission and helped form the “Adopt-A-Mile” program and “Keep America Beautiful” for the city of Thomasville.

Mr. And Mrs. Stewart moved to Valdosta in 1994. They joined Park Avenue United Methodist Church and Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mrs. Stewart was a member of Holly Garden Club, Literary Guild and an active member of the American Contract Bridge League.

The Stewarts have spent summers in Maggie Valley and Dillsboro, NC.

Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Keith and Diane Stewart of Valdosta, a daughter and son in law, Teresa and David Babbit of Marietta, grandchildren, Amy and Jay Smith, Bryan and Kim Stewart, Andy and Kim Bolton, Ansley Bolton all of Valdosta, Carter Babbit, Molly Babbit, Kate and Mike Williams, all of Atlanta, great grandchildren, Abbie Stewart, Ellie Smith and Ashton Bolton all of Valdosta.

A memorial service will be held at the Carson McLane Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p. m. Monday at the residence, 613 Howell Brook Drive. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Park Avenue United Methodist Church Music Ministry, First United Methodist Church, Thomasville, Pearlman Cancer Center or Hospice of South Georgia.
