Mrs. Clare Martin, 88 of Valdosta, died on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at her residence. Born Clare Philips on September 28, 1916 in Palatka, FL, she was the daughter of the late Clare Eliza Hodge and Louis d’Anterroches Philips. She graduated in 1934 from Palatka High School and received her AB degree from Florida Southern College in 1938. She married Dr. S. Walter Martin on July 30, 1940.
Clare Martin lived in Athens for 17 years where her husband was a professor of history and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. The couple lived in Atlanta for the next ten years where the late Dr. Martin was President of Emory University, and later Vice Chancellor of the University System of Georgia. In 1966, they moved to Valdosta where he was President of Valdosta State College until his retirement in 1978.
Mrs. Martin presided over the president’s homes at Emory and at Valdosta State with grace and charm. A friendly and engaging person, she acquired a large number of friends in the community, among the college group and in her church. She held a number of positions in the United Methodist Women’s Organization and in her Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer for the Hospital Auxiliary, A.C.T.O. and the church Clothes Closet. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, VSU Sewing group and the 55 and Alive group.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Martin and Hampton Logan, Jr. of Atlanta; her son and daughter-in-law, Louis Philips and Ellice Passmore Martin of Homerville; grandchildren, Brett Martin and his wife Traycee of Valdosta, Clare Martin Roath and her husband Daniel of Atlanta, Stephanie Logan Martin and her husband Chris of Atlanta, Ashley Logan and her husband Jeff Eigeman of Atlanta, Austin Logan of Atlanta; great grandchildren, Sidney Alexander (Sam) Martin and Mary Clare Martin of Valdosta, John Philips Roath of Atlanta, Madison Clare Martin, Mary Ellen Martin and Sidney Eigeman of Atlanta; brother-in-law, Cmdr. W. W. Tilghman of Palatka, FL; niece, Phyllis Rose Harrell and nephew, Julian Tilghman of Palatka, FL and nephew, Ben Tilghman of Divide, CO. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Sidney Walter Martin and sister, Phyllis Philips Tilghman.
Funeral services for Mrs. S. Walter Martin will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at First United Methodist Church. Dr. Charles Adams, Reverend James Davis and Reverend V. L. Daughtery will officiate. Interment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton following the service. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
