Monty Stratton Griffin

May 9, 1950 — January 7, 2010

Monty Stratton Griffin, 59, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at his residence following a fight with cancer. He was born on May 9, 1950 in Adel and has lived in Valdosta area for the past 20 years. He was the Assistant Director for Landscape and Grounds for Valdosta State University where his talents and creativity produced much beauty for the campus. He graduated from Brooks County High in 1968, attended ABAC for two years, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in speech and drama from Birmingham Southern College. He was a national 4-H winner in forestry, and for 10 years worked as a county extension agent for several counties in north Georgia. He was Episcopal by faith and he shared his time and talents with many Episcopal churches in this area, most notably St. John's Episcopal Church in Moultrie, St. James Episcopal Church in Quitman and Christ Episcopal Church in Valdosta.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Griffin of Valdosta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nikki and Brad Purvis of Villa Rica and Erin and Matthew Georgia of Twenty Nine Palms, CA.; a son, Michael Griffin of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Jane Marie Griffin of Twenty Nine Palms, CA., Rachel Purvis of Villa Rica, Julia Faye Georgia of Twenty Nine Palms, CA., Zachary Purvis of Villa Rica, and Anna Catherine Georgia of Twenty Nine Palms, CA.; his parents, Ed and Faye Griffin of Barney; a sister and brother-in-law, Stephanie and Buddy Murray also of Barney; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mike Griffin.

A funeral service for Monty Stratton Griffin will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Christ Episcopal Church with The Rev. Tar Drazdowski and Rev. Deacon Patricia Marks officiating. The interment will follow in the church burial garden. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parish hall.
