Monteze Starling, 87, of Lake Park died on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Born in Lexington, AL to the late Joe & Blanche McCafferty, she had lived in this area for the past 60 years. Mrs. Starling worked for the Social Security Administration for over 30 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Valdosta, Georgia.
She went on numerous mission projects through the church which included trips to Liberia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Honduras, St . Kitts Island, and Kentucky. She was an example of lovingkindness and humility. She practiced Christian hospitality to all people and lived by the motto: "Be Christ to others, See Christ in others." She was devoted to her children and reminded them that they were her investment in the world. Her heart overflowed with love for others, especially 'the least of these'. People in her presence have said, "I like myself best when I am with her." There is no greater compliment. She is beloved by her family and friends! She was a genuine example of a holy person.
Survivors include three sons and a daughter in law, Ralph L. Starling of Richmond, VA, Mark A. Starling of Lake Park, and David L. & Sugako Starling of Lake Park; a daughter, Susan Monteze Starling of Marietta; three grandchildren, Conor Starling & Natsumi Starling, both of Lake Park and Marki Starling of Marietta. Also surviving are two brothers & sisters in law, Louie Gene & Doris McCafferty of Rogersville, AL and Luther & Lanee McCafferty of Lexington, Al; two sisters, Sue Waldrop of Guntersville, AL and Wylodean McLaughlin of Killen, AL; two uncles and an aunt, William Cox of Elizabethtown, KY and Milford Cox and Robbie Cantrell, both of Tennessee and a brother in law, George Saunders of Albany. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. Starling, Sr. and two brothers, Tonice McCafferty and Cleo McCafferty, and three sisters, Inez Black and Gwen Saunders and June McCafferty.
A funeral service for Mrs. Starling will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Valdosta. Rev. Mac Weaver will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 2 p.m. until service time.
