MITCHELL JONES SMITH, JR.
Mitchell Smith, 93, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Langdale Hospice. Mr. Smith was born to the late Mitchell Jones Smith, Sr. & Elsie Morris Smith, and was a life-long member at Central Avenue Church of Christ. He spent his early years growing up on Wildwood Plantation and graduated from Valdosta High School. Mr. Smith held a degree from Cornell University and served in the Navy during World War II. He was a long-time member of the Sunset Lake Hunting and Fishing Club as well as the Kiwanis Club. Most of his career was spent in the insurance business and he was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as gardening. Mr. Smith was also an avid Valdosta Wildcats football fan and had held season tickets since he was sixteen years old.
Survivors include his wife, Lota Smith of Valdosta, son Bruce Smith and daughter-in-law Cathie Smith of Valdosta, son John Smith of Atlanta and grandson Sean Haley of Atlanta as well as several nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his son, Wayne Smith and his two sisters, Margaret Hendry and Morris Smith.
Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 15, 2015 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Mr. John Klimko will officiate and burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 15, 2015. Flowers may be gifted or donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, P.O. Box 1727, Valdosta, Georgia 31603-1727, www.hospiceofsouthgeorgia.org
