Miriam Dees Fletcher, 89, lifelong resident of Valdosta, recently of Statesboro, died on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 in Statesboro. Born on July 23, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Clara McPhil Dees and Carnett Dees. Miriam grew up in the Redland Community of Lowndes County where she graduated from Clyattville School. She began work at Grant's Department Store in downtown Valdosta, before beginning a 20-year career with Owens-Illinois Bag Plant, retiring in 1981. Known to many as "Bit" she enjoyed being a caregiver to the elderly and those with special needs. A member of Dasher Church of Christ, Miriam loved her church family and faithfully enjoyed attending. She cherished her time spent with friends and family and she found much joy in baking and delivering her old fashioned pound cakes throughout the community. Her loving, caring, and kind generosity will forever be in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
Survivors are her children, James Carnett (Jim) and Janet McGhin of Statesboro, Donald Edward McGhin of Valdosta, Frank and Darla Fletcher of Valdosta; step children, Jimmy Fletcher of Lake Park, Vickie Coleman of Hahira, and Bonnie and Buzzy Jones of Valdosta; grandchildren, Meredith and Gary Crosby of Naylor, Jared and Jennifer McGhin of Guyton, Ryan and Tiffany McGhin of Denver, CO., Amanda Fletcher of Lake Tahoe, CA., Lane Fletcher of Valdosta, Ashleigh Mixon of Chesapeake Bay, VA., Jessica and Preston Taylor of Hahira; five great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren; a sister, Marion Copeland of Valdosta; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fletcher was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Fletcher, Sr.; a son, Warren Leo McGhin; step daughter, Betty Frances Mosley; sisters and brothers, Lanell Scroozynski, Helen Watson, Dorothy Beggs, Edward Dees, Bill Dees, Buck Dees and Sam Dees.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 18, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Mr. David Nelson will officiate. Mr. Steven Dees will give the eulogy. Burial will follow at Redland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted and donations may be made in memory of Mrs. Fletcher to Georgia Christian School 4359 Dasher Road Valdosta GA 31601.
