Mildred Whitehead, of Valdosta, passed away a few days after her 98th birthday at the Presbyterian Home, Quitman.
She was born August 20, 1914 in Putman County, a daughter of the late Walter M. and Janie Peters McConnell. Following her father's death, she moved to Valdosta while she was in the second grade and attended school at the Valdosta State College Training School. For many years Ms. Whitehead lived on North Slater St., after residing in Thomasville, and retired from First National Bank at the age of 70.
Ms. Whitehead was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a serious Bridge player and enjoyed her travels around the world.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lonnie Dean Whitehead and Dee Ann of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Walter McConnell Whitehead and Lois of Alpharetta, GA; six grandchildren, Edward Whitehead and wife Gail of Austin, TX, John Whitehead of Naperville, IL, David Whitehead and wife Cathy of Forest Hill, MD, JoAnn Degnan and husband Greg of Naperville, IL, Ted Whitehead of Cumming, GA, and Brad Whitehead and wife Tracy of Dawsonville, GA; seven great-grandchildren; one niece, Jane Sherwood of Valdosta, GA; and several great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane Mixer Patterson and Rebecca M. Whitman; and two nephews, Mack Mixer and Leon Mixer.
A Graveside Memorial Service for Ms. Whitehead will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at Riverview Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Bob Moon officiating. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com. Carson McLane Funeral Home, Valdosta.
