Merita Davis Powell

June 15, 1929 — February 12, 2015

Merita Davis Powell, 85, died at her Valdosta residence Thursday. The widow of Cador Crawford Powell Sr., she was a dental hygienist and volunteer in church and civic programs. Her pound cakes were sought after by friends and family alike.
Mrs. Powell delivered meals for the Break Bread Together program and volunteered through Southland Church as a pen pal for prisoners under the pseudonym Merrie Rose. She gave her time to the Georgia Power Ambassadors; Mr. Powell was a Georgia Power Company retiree. Mrs. Powell was a charter member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, now known as The Gathering.
At least once a week, she whipped up a cream cheese pound cake from the hand-written recipe stuck in a kitchen cabinet door. There were no measurements on the recipe because she knew the amounts by heart and by instinct. As her health declined, Mrs. Powell was a regular at ACTO, the day care program for people with Alzheimer's, and delighted at her BINGO wins.
The memorial service for Mrs. Powell is 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Carson McLane Funeral Home in Valdosta. Visitation is at 1:30. Burial is in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com
Mrs. Powell, born June 15, 1929, was the daughter of the late Theron Rupert and Hattie Inez Burton Davis of Thomasville. On the Davis and Powell sides of her family, she was a regular at family reunions held at the Ivan Berry Stegall house in Thomasville and relished the memories each trip to Thomasville evoked. She looked forward to attending the annual Powell cousins reunion at Cherry Lake, FL, where she had celebrated many fun times.
Mrs. Powell's three brothers were the late Wyman Davis of Houston, TX, Brantley Davis of Thomasville, and Vernon Davis of Gainesville.
Survivors include her daughter, Kristy Susan Powell, and two sons, Cador Crawford Powell Jr. (wife Becky) and John Joseph Powell, all of Valdosta; her sister, Virginia Davis Vann of Leesburg, FL; grandchildren Hayley Susan Lueders of Tucson, AZ, Chelsea Merie Lueders Eno (husband, Ivan) of Knoxville, TN, Juliana Lynn Powell of Valdosta, and her step-grandson, Jason Paul Moore of Valdosta.
Memorial contributions may be made to ACTO (Alzheimer's Caregiver Time Out (ACTO), 2835 Fawnwood Circle, Valdosta, GA 31602 or to Break Bread Together in care of First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 807, Valdosta, GA 31603.
The family is grateful to Mrs. Powell's caregiver, Mary Fillmore, to Hospice of South Georgia, and to ACTO.
