Melvin Thomas Ray, 89, of Valdosta died Tuesday, July 28, 2009at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas. He was born in Liberty County on November 30, 1919 to the late Benjamin F. and Rosa Mobley Ray and had lived in this area for many years. Mr. Ray was a member of Charity Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, Benny Ray of Savannah, two sisters, Lucille Scott of Tallahassee, Fla. and Gertrude Spivey of Fernandina, Fla., four daughters, Nancy Sweat, Linda Smith, Ellen Hopper and Harriet Turner and three sons, Jimmy Ray, Johnny Ray and Ricky Ray; two stepsons, Jerry Thompson of Bushnell, Fla. and Jimmy Thompson of Panama City, Fla., step daughter in law, Elaine Thompson Mallory of Panama City, Fla., numeorus grandchildren, great grandchildren, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Frances Thompson Ray, a son, Alfred Ray, two brothers, Cecil Ray, Horace Ray, a sister, Ida Ruth Laughinghouse and stepson, Louie Edward Thompson, Sr.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 9am, Friday, July 31, 2009 at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens with Dr. Clyde Stokes officiating. Carson McLane Funeral Home.
