Melvin H. Blanton

Melvin H. Blanton, 72, of Valdosta died on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born on May 22, 1936 in Lowndes County to the late Alfred and Rena Smith Blanton. He was the owner/operator of Blanton Butcher Shop and had been in the Grocery business his whole life. Mr. Blanton was also a lifelong farmer and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and C.W. Prine; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Karen Blanton, Greg and Kathy Blanton all of Valdosta, and Brian and Jeannie Blanton of Echols County; ten grandchildren and their spouses, Christy M. and Ryan Harrigan, Earon and Amanda Gray, Shawnda and Deric Godwin, Timothy Blanton, Holly and Justin Barrett, Lindsey and Daniel Warren, Jay and Erin Blanton, Dewayne Blanton, Brianne Blanton and Ken Blanton; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan Lee Harrigan, Braylon Harrigan, Payden Harrigan, Dylan Duffy, Kalei Godwin, Analei Barrett and Noah Warren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude and Mary Blanton, Havard and Jeanine Blanton, and Arthur and Frances Blanton all of Valdosta; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Anna and Paul White and Lois Ellis all of Valdosta, and the mother of his children, Geraldine Blanton Graham also of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Gail Blanton; two brothers, L.A. Blanton and Albert Blanton; two sisters, Kathleen Thompson and Zelphia Rentz; special pet and good friend, Ren Blanton.

Services for Mr. Blanton will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Eldridge Lyons and Evangelist Evans McMullen officiating. The burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
