Melba D. Jones, 96, of Ormond Beach, Florida, died on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at Ormond Memorial Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida. Born in Squires, Missouri, on September 24, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Claude Lyngarr Dameron and Lula Brazeal Dameron. Mrs. Jones graduated from Lowndes High School in 1933. In later years she earned an Associates Degree in Administration from Tallahassee Community College. Mrs. Jones worked with the City of Tallahassee Fire Department for more than 25 years, serving as the Administrative Assistant to the Fire Chief. A member of the Church of Christ, Mrs. Jones enjoyed reading and loved cooking for family and friends. She welcomed every baby into the family with one of her beautiful crocheted afghans.
Survivors include a daughter, Claudette Tackett of Ormond Beach, Florida; three grandchildren, Charles (Donna) Knirk of Flagler Beach, Florida, Laura Schumaker of Valrico, Florida and Elizabeth Harris of Ormond Beach, Florida; six great grandchildren; three sisters, Phyllis (Billy) Hayes of Valdosta, Isabel Neal of Valdosta and Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Leadell Williams of Ozark, Alabama; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jones is also preceded in death by three children, Laura Elizabeth Knirk, Carolyn Ray Baran, and M. Brooks Jones; a brother, Raymond L. Dameron who died in WWII; and two brothers in law, Ralph Neal and Buddy Williams, Sr.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, January 2, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Valdosta, Georgia. Mr. Andrew Sykes will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Monday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecare.com
