Mattie Lou Nix, 89, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Canton, Georgia at the Canton Nursing Center following a period of declining health. She was born on September 5, 1934, in Pearson, Georgia to the late Mose and Myrtle McNeal Giddens. She was a retired substitute teacher for the Lowndes County School System and was a member of Redland Baptist Church. She was known as a Godly lady, and was very active in her former church, Grace Baptist, where she taught Sunday school, VBS, and served in various functions in the church.
She is survived by her husband, Emerson Nix of Valdosta; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Carey and Cindy Thomas of Ball Ground, Georgia and Ralph Emerson Nix II of Valdosta; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann Stephens and David Gibson of Rydal, Georgia; grandchildren, Nicole Thomas and Logan Will of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Christian Thomas of Ball Ground, and Brook Stephens of Rydal; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Wayne Haddock of Waycross and Patsy Ann and Bobby McGee of Lake Park; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded by two brothers, Jackie Giddens and Kenny Giddens.
Services for Mattie Lou Nix will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Vaughn officiating. The burial will follow in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
