Mattie Goodson Szymanski

September 28, 1926 — December 21, 2016

Mattie Szymanski, 90, of Valdosta died Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born in Miami, FL on September 28, 1926. She moved at an early age to Valdosta. Ms. Szymanski was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam Goodson, Sr.
A graduate of Valdosta High School, she attended business school in Macon and South Georgia Normal College in Valdosta. She received her Sociology degree from Florida International University in Miami, FL. During her business career, Ms. Szymanski traveled across the United States while working for Western Union. She also worked for Moody Air Force Base, the Social Security Administration, Rayonier Advanced Materials in Fernandina Beach, FL and Horace Stephenson Jewelers at Brookwood Plaza. After her retirement, she worked at Lake Park Elementary School.
Ms. Szymanski was a member of the Eastern Star, serving as a Worthy Matron in Miami, FL. She was also a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and A.A.R.P. in Valdosta. Her hobbies included reading, traveling, sewing, and gardening. She enjoyed entering her culinary creations in the Valdosta Daily Times Cooking Contest. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lake Park.
Ms. Szymanski is survived by her son and daughter in law, Chester and Peggy Szymanski of Venice, FL;
Brother and sisters in law, Richard and Peggy Goodson, Athens, sisters and brothers in law, Linda and Richard Wicker, Americus, and Marion and Vernon Stephenson, Lake Park, sisters in law, Julianna Goodson, Marietta, and Delores Goodson, Palatka, FL; grandchildren, Nicole Szymanski, Venice, FL and Gena Hutchinson, Valdosta; great grandchildren, Zane and Abrey Hutchinson, Valdosta, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ms. Szymanski was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Goodson, Sr., brothers, Sam Goodson, Jr., Gene C. Goodson, Sr., and Jerry Wayne Goodson and sisters, Mary Johnson and Margaret Turner.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 26, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Ms. Szymanski's nephew, Reverend Jeremy Wicker of Americus will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1pm-2pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eastern Star in care of the St. John the Baptist Masonic Lodge in Valdosta. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
